A GIFT FROM

"A Gift From" is my contribution to FRED 2006. Click here for more information about FRED, and here for my page on the FRED website.

I have placed souvenirs, bought from charity shops in Cockermouth, Maryport and Workington, in geocaches close to those towns. Each of the items is uniquely tagged and the community of geocachers (go here for an explanation and here for a look at the geocaching website), will move the items along and log some pictures as the objects pass through their possession. The souvenirs are not originally from the towns in which they were bought. I have asked for them to be returned to their 'hometown'.My interest in doing this comes from being fascinated by the idea that although we are resistant to identity cards, CCTV and the like, many people routinely surveille themselves in all sorts of ways. I am also keen to recontextualise art practice into various 'elsewheres', partly because I don't get shown that often, but mainly because most people don't get to see or experience art except in controlled environments, and expectations are different when it's something you stumble across. Art is something that can and should engage with the world at large rather than just be sequestered into a controlled space for contemplation by a minority.

Click on the object to find out how it's getting along and for pictures of it's journey.
